Welcome to Ric Day

Living in Portland, Maine, Ric Day is a retired physician turned furniture and chair maker who has a passion to recognize the efforts of our men and women who have served our country. As a father of a US Army combat veteran and as a physician working with Veterans in the VA Hospital system, Ric has a unique professional and personal perspective and passion that he  uses to help others find the pleasure of using hand made objects and perhaps eventually make their own and find the satisfaction of creating.

“I feel it is important for all Americans to recognize the efforts of our men and women who have served our country and this is a way I can give back,” Richard Day

Ric’s chair making journey is not unlike most of our other makers. “I was fascinated with Windsor Chairs after a trip to Philadelphia and seeing examples in Independence Hall in 1976. These were elegant, sturdy and comfortable. The chairs were present in the early days in our nation's history.” As a result, Ric took his first class in chairmaking in 1996 after being further inspired by the movie The Patriot.

Since that time Ric has  focused on developing his skills in spindle and bowl turning, cabinet making, and Period Furniture as well as chairmaking in a variety of Windsor forms including: side chairs, arm chairs, rocking chairs and styles like Sack Back, Nantucket Fan Back and the Curtis Buchannan designed Democratic Chair. His style is influenced from a variety of sources and he enjoys the process of making functional pieces from simple Shaker inspired to Period furniture. He teaches classes in lathe turning, hand cutting dovetail joints for cabinet case work, Windsor style chairs and stools.

We’re excited to have Ric join our team of makers. If you’re in the northeastern US and would like to have Ric craft a Chair of Honor for you or your Veteran, contact us directly at info@chairsofhonor.com
